The history of Spritz

The origin of this aperitif cocktail dates back to the end of the 19th century, when Venice was still part of the Austrian Empire. During this historical period, Austrian soldiers drank mostly local Veneto wines in the taverns and bars where they were stationed. However, they often diluted the wines with water to obtain an alcohol content very similar to the beer they were used to drinking. Thus was born the Spritzer, an equal combination of white wine and sparkling water.

Spritz is made with the traditional white wines of the Veneto region, such as Pinot Grigio, Soave and Prosecco. The bitter liqueur used varies according to taste. Campari is the driest liqueur. A funny fact from Gruppo Campari, according to the latter, about 300,000 Spritzs are consumed every day, which is a staggering number on an annual basis!

The presentation of the cocktail varies. Often garnished with a slice of orange, some also combine it with an olive, depending on the liqueur used.

Today, many variations of this cocktail are available, even non-alcoholic mocktail versions! Several ready-to-drink mixes are now proposed.
